Used oil dealers represent a specific niche within the petroleum products sector. Used oil dealers perform functions ranging from transportation intermediaries to remediation of waste oil products.

The common thread between an intermediary (smaller companies) and a recycler is that both collect and transport used oil products, lubricants and other miscellaneous products such as antifreeze. Their customer base is the same and encompasses quick lubes, automobile dealerships and mechanic/service stations.

Oil recyclers perform the same functions as an intermediary, but with two major distinctions. Recyclers will almost always return products picked up at customer location to their own storage and recycling facilities to reclamate the product, which is essentially a removal of all contaminants such as sediment, water and miscellaneous other items.

The second major difference between a recycler and an intermediary is the end user of the product. Whereas most intermediaries would most likely sell their products to a recycler, the recycler does the actual reclamation and sells the product to the end user.

Ineligible Exposures:

  • Repackaging of oil for retail sales
  • Delivery to industrial or heavy equipment including generators
  • Blending or mixing of oils
